Maine DOL took $1.3M from feds in error

The Maine Department of Labor has asked its federal counterpart to waive repayment of most of the $1.3 million the state allegedly received in error over a 12-year period. DOL Commissioner Robert Winglass said a federal audit recently uncovered the error.

Winglass told The Associated Press Friday that poor internal procedures led to the state claiming the money from the federal DOL over more than a decade, and that the problem was recently discovered. He said he asked federal officials to waive repayment of the majority of the money. He did not say how the state used the money.

Gov. Paul LePage said it's another example of state financial processes that need more transparency and accountability.
