Maine gets $3.5M in USDA rural project loans

Four Maine projects, including redevelopment of a long-vacant Orono building, will get a portion of $3.5 million in federal loans announced Tuesday.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced in a press release that its Rural Development program has awarded loans to the town of Orono, the Bath Area YMCA, the Bethel Water District and Penquis Mental Health Organization in Dover-Foxcroft.

The town of Orono will receive the largest portion of the grant — $2 million — for expansion of a town parking lot adjacent to the future headquarters of University Credit Union. The Bangor Daily News reported that the UCU redevelopment at the former Katahdin Building, which was gutted by fire in 2009, is expected to begin construction in June for completion by next spring.

The other loan awards include:

  • $1.15 million for energy efficiency improvements at the Bath YMCA
  • $275,000 for replacing aging cast-iron water mains in Bethel
  • $131,000 for Penquis to purchase a residential facility for development and intellectual disability services
