A bill that would ban minors from using commercial tanning beds has received preliminary approval from both chambers of Maine's Legislature.
The Bangor Daily News reported an 82-63 House vote on the bill Tuesday fell largely along party lines, with Democrats arguing that banning anyone under 18 from using tanning booths would increase awareness of skin cancer risks associated with indoor tanning.
Republicans argued against the bill because new tanning booth age restrictions passed in 2009 are set to take effect this year. Those new regulations will require parents to accompany 14- and 15-year-olds to indoor tanning salons, and will require consent forms for 16- and 17-year-olds.
The bill needs final votes in the House and Senate, which endorsed passage of the bill last week, to be sent to Gov. Paul LePage, who has not taken a position on it.
Only California and Vermont have bans on tanning booths for anyone younger than 18, the paper reported.
