Maine has 19 work-related deaths in 2010

Maine had 19 workplace fatalities in 2010, comprising 13% of the region's workplace deaths last year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

A total of 146 fatal work injuries were reported in New England last year, making it the fourth-lowest since recording began in 1992, according to a BLS press release. In Maine, 12 of the fatalities were transportation incidents, with nine of those being highway accidents. The transportation and material-moving group accounted for eight deaths, while farming, forestry and fishing had four. Almost half the state's deaths were of workers age 55 and over. Maine had 16 work-related fatalities in 2009 and 24 in 2008.

Massachusetts had the highest number of deaths in New England with 51, followed by Connecticut with 49. Vermont had 13, Rhode Island had nine and New Hampshire had five.
