A new chairlift at Sugarloaf in Carrabassett Valley is running, nearly one year after an accident on the previous lift injured eight skiers.
About 300 people lined up to ride the $3 million Skyline Quad when it opened on Saturday, according to the Morning Sentinel. The lift replaces the 35-year-old Spillway East chairlift that derailed last Dec. 28, dropping skiers nearly 30 feet into the snow below. An investigation into the accident by the Maine State Board of Elevator and Tramway Safety did not determine the exact cause, but found human error, weather and maintenance problems were contributing factors.
The old lift had been scheduled to be replaced as part of Sugarloaf's 10-year growth plan. Other projects planned for the 2011-2012 season including converting the resort's SuperQuad lift to a digital system and adding another 135 acres of expanded terrain on Burnt Mountain.
