A Falmouth real estate investor is one of three Maine people buying the famed Balsams Grand Resort in Dixville Notch, N.H., for an undisclosed price.
Tillotson Corp. on Monday announced a trio of Maine investors was buying the hotel, where presidential primary ballots have been cast for 50 years, but the identities of the buyers were not disclosed. James McCann stepped forward as one of the buyers, and told New Hampshire Public Radio he and his partners plan to close on the deal by the end of the month. McCann has been in residential and commercial real estate since 1973, including selling some hotels, and was most recently involved in a 66-unit development on Baxter Boulevard in Portland. He did not discuss the group's plans for the property, but The Associated Press reported the buyers plan to close the 7,700-acre resort for nine months for $12 million in renovations before reopening next summer.
Since 1960, the 150-year-old resort has been the site where presidential primary ballots are cast just after midnight on primary day, making votes cast by Dixville Notch residents among the first to be cast, counted and reported nationally.
