Portland mega berth welcomes cruise ships

Portland's $6 million mega berth at the Ocean Gateway terminal, which accommodates larger cruise ships and commercial vessels, is now open.

The first ship to use what's known as Pier II was Enchantment of the Seas over the weekend, according to The Associated Press. The Celebrity Summit cruise ship will dock at the 1,200-foot-long pier today. Woolwich-based Reed & Reed Inc. built the pier, and originally hoped to have it completed by July 31. A grand opening reception is scheduled for later this month.

Last year, a $57.8 million bond package included $7 million for the mega berth and other harbor improvements.
