Maine lags in compensation

A new comparison of earnings puts Maine behind the national average in compensation increases.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, the country as a whole saw a 5.2 % increase in total compensation from 2006 to 2007, while Maine's growth rate came in at 4.1%. The total compensation paid to Mainers in 2007 was $27.7 billion, a tick up from 2006's $26.6 billion.

Cumberland County residents register the greatest compensation, with a total average compensation by job of $47,149 in 2006 that rose to $49,044 in 2007. Piscataquis had the lowest compensation, rising slightly from $32,609 in 2006 to $33,925 in 2007.

The compensation category includes wages, salaries, bonuses, commissions and stock options. Employer contributions to health, retirement and life insurance plans also are included.
