Maine lobster gets sustainability nod

As Legislators consider multiple bills to increase marketing of the state's signature crustacean, Maine's lobster industry received an international sustainability award this weekend that industry veterans say could help.

The Portland Press Herald reported the Marine Stewardship Council's Sustainable Seafood Certification will boost the profile of Maine lobster and open it to new markets, as large buyers like McDonald's and Walmart have said they will buy MSC-certified seafood.

The certification comes after an evaluation of wild-capture fisheries based on the health of the fish stock, marine ecosystem protection and the effectiveness of fishery management.

Becoming a certified fishery also will allow Maine's lobster fishery to join MSC's tracking program that allows each certified lobster to be traced back to the exact boat on which it was caught.
