Six months before the Maine Mariners hit the ice in Portland, the hockey team has inked an affiliation agreement with the New York Rangers.
Starting this October, the Maine Mariners will play 36 home games at Portland’s Cross Insurance Arena.
It will be one of 28 teams in the ECHL league, which also includes the Adirondack Thunder, Manchester Monarchs and Worcester Railers.
Adam Goldberg, vice president of business operations for the Maine Mariners, said in an email to Mainebiz that while the direct impact of the Rangers affiliation remains to be seen.
“I think having the affiliation of a prestigious team like the Rangers can only help,” he wrote. “We would love to make sure that New York fans know they can see the future Rangers when they visit Maine now.”
The Rangers joined the National Hockey League in 1926 as an Original 6 franchise along with Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Montreal and Toronto. The four-time Stanley Cup champions play at Madison Square Garden and have Hall of Fame alumni such as Mark Messier, Rod Gilbert and Brian Leetch.
Lately the Rangers have hit a patch of rough ice, firing coach Alain Vigneault this past Saturday night after losing 5-0 to the Philadelphia Flyers and missing the NHL playoffs for the first time since the 2009-10 season, according to ESPN.
The Hartford Wolf Pack is the Rangers’ American Hockey League affiliate.
Asked about Mariners’ season ticket sales, Goldberg said they are going well and that the franchise plans to release its flex ticket plan soon, “which should be very popular with fans that aren’t sure what games they will make it to.”
The team is currently accepting full- and half-season ticket deposits of $50 a seat, according to its website. Season tickets benefits include six vouchers for family and friends to attend a future game (excluding opening night), a season ticket card and the option of a multiple month payment plan starting in January.
Merchandise went on sale last November when the team unveiled its “ME” logo in white, blue and green, designed by Big Room Studios of Portland.
