Maine Medical Center announced it will host three dental school graduates for residencies in Maine next summer in an effort the health care network said would help address a shortage of dentists.
The Maine Public Broadcasting Network reported Maine Med signed an agreement to participate in the residency program with the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston and Community Dental, an organization that seeks to expand access to dental care in Maine.
Peter Bates, vice president of medical and academic affairs at Maine Med, told the network that the new residency program comes in response to a report presented to the Legislature earlier this year highlighting that nearly a quarter of the state’s dentists plan to retire within the next five years. Bates also said dental pain is the leading cause of emergency room visits in the state.
Through the one-year residency program, dentists would be paid a salary of around $50,000 and would work in clinics in Portland, Farmington, Rumford, Biddeford and Lewiston.
