Maine Medical Center nurses explore unionizing

A spokeswoman for the Maine State Nurses Association acknowledges that nurses at Maine Medical Center are trying to organize a union, but has declined answering any other questions about the effort which, if successful, could add 1,700 employees to the association’s 2,000 membership in Maine.

Vanessa Sylvester, bargaining coordinator with the Maine State Nurses Association, told the Portland Press Herald that details about the unionizing effort would be provided later.

Judith West, senior vice president and chief human resources officer for Maine Medical Center and its parent company, MaineHealth, told the newspaper the hospital respects the right of its nurses to explore the unionizing option but believes it already is giving its nurses the opportunity to have a strong voice in decisions affecting their work.
