Maine Medical Center has proposed an ambitious $512 million expansion that would be the largest project of its kind undertaken by the Portland-based hospital.
The Associated Press reported that the multimillion-dollar expansion would expand the hospital’s main campus by 300,000 square feet, an increase of approximately 25%.
The proposal would add 20 operating rooms, but wouldn’t change the total number of beds at the hospital. Instead, more than 673 beds would be moved to private, single-patient rooms, according to the AP.
If the hospital’s proposal is approved and it gets all of the needed permits, as well as approval from local and state officials, the expansion is expected to be completed by 2022.
