There's nothing like a snowy Christmas getaway to get into the holiday spirit. Being surrounded by beautifully decorated Christmas trees and snow on the ground — what better place to see all of this than a visit to Maine?
Family Destination Guide agrees. The vacation publication, which features reviews of family-friendly hotels, resorts, destinations and attractions, announced that Maine was voted the best place to spend the holidays in this year's survey. In the poll conducted to find out which state is the best to spend Christmas as a family, North Dakota ranked second and New Hampshire took the third spot. Hawaii came in last when the research team examined different variables, including hotel prices, cold weather and crime rates.
Maine was top of the list for its winter wonderland and low crime rates. Survey data shows the Pine Tree State has the lowest rate of violent crime, while the average temperature in December is a chilly 41.9 degrees, the fifth-lowest temperature of all 50 states. However, Maine has the seventh most expensive hotels, with a night for a family of four averaging $326.84. Arkansas has the cheapest hotel stay for a family of four, pricing at an average of $144.07 per night compared to Hawaii at the other end, which had an average of $746.97. Survey results can be found here.
"It’s not surprising that Maine is the top destination for Christmas this year,” said Kathleen Pierce, director of member experience for HospitalityMaine. “Across the country, few states can rival Maine’s diversity. Maine has everything from cozy cabins to urban sophistication to luxury resorts with unmatched ocean views. Traveling families can find all levels of lodgings to accommodate a variety of interests and budgets.”
A spokesperson from Family Destinations Guide said of the findings: “Everyone has a different idea of what the perfect Christmas looks like, and the great thing about America is the wide range of different climates available for people looking for a festive getaway. Our study ranks the best places for a traditional snowy Christmas while also factoring in important elements such as cost and safety. We want to provide families with the best guides to help them have great travels, and this study certainly puts Maine on the map for Christmas family getaways.”
“HospitalityMaine supports hotel and lodging businesses to offer market rates that are appropriate for each,” said Matthew Lewis, president and CEO of HospitalityMaine. “Maine has a great range of wonderful accommodations. Many options are available at different price ranges. Maine is a beautiful destination for the holidays.”
