In a bid to lure diners to Maine restaurants during the off season, several organizations have launched a “Winter Wednesdays” campaign with price specials from Jan. 8 through March 26.

From half-price oysters at Top of the East in Portland to discounted wine and oysters at the Boathouse Restaurant in Kennebunkport, the offers aim to drum up more business at restaurants, breweries and cafes on an off night in the off season.

The move comes as rising costs and lower margins remain a burden for the industry, with some in the industry describing the situation in Portland as an "apocalypse" following the closure of dozens of eateries.

"As the weather gets cold and the visitors thin out, we need to support our local eateries and breweries and encourage people to take advantage of all the great establishments that make our state such a draw for food enthusiasts," said Quincy Hentzel, president and CEO of Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce.

The joint effort is led by VisitPortland, the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce, HospitalityMaine, the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce and Portland Downtown.

“People are making tough decisions about where to spend their money,” said Becky Jacobson, executive director of HospitalityMaine. “By supporting a small restaurant in the dead of winter, you are keeping your dollars in the community and supporting Maine’s most vital industry.”

Participating businesses are listed here, with more being encouraged to join, Kathleen Pierce, HospitalityMaine’s membership and communications director, told Mainebiz. Participants include restaurants, breweries and bars, as well as coffee shops and bakeries.

Pierce said the campaign does not seek to compete with the annual Maine Restaurant Week, which will take place this year from March 1-12.

Because Winter Wednesdays starts earlier in the winter, she said, “it should boost Maine Restaurant Week, but it is an independent campaign.”

Like Maine Restaurant Week, the plan is to make Winter Wednesdays an annual event. according to Pierce.

"We are excited to promote our food establishments during a time when things are a little slower," said Lynn Tillotson, president and CEO of Visit Portland. “Increased visitation to our favorite spots helps the staff, who work incredibly hard all year long. And, on top of it, it’s a perfect time to get out with family and friends.”
