Maine population declines in U.S. Census estimate

The latest U.S. Census Bureau estimates show Maine’s population declined by 199 people in July 2013, compared with the same month one year ago. West Virginia is the only other state to show negative population growth in the latest survey.

The latest population estimate puts the number of Maine residents at 1,328,302 for 2013, down slightly from 1,328,501 the previous year. That drop fell within the survey’s margin of error, showing the population was basically stagnant. Nationally, the population grew by 2,255,154 people over the year, an increase of less than 1%. In the Northeast, the population rose 171,281 over the year, an increase of 0.31%, which was the smallest regional increase.

The U.S. Census Bureau is expected to release a more detailed analysis of the components of Maine’s population change in January.
