Maine population growing but seeing more deaths than births

The economy of three northern New England states continues to be affected by stagnant population growth.

The Associated Press reported that Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont face similar challenges in retaining and attracting residents of working age.

“We cannot have economic growth without demographic growth, and we’re facing a situation where more and more businesses aren’t going to be able to fill jobs because there aren’t enough workers, let alone skilled workers,” Maine State Economist Amanda Rector told the AP.

Maine’s population grew by 2,026 last year to just over 1.3 million. But there were 1,300 more deaths than births.

Maine, which has the oldest median age in the nation, has stemmed a more serious population decline with a wave of immigrants, Rector said.
