Snow and cold boost Maine's ski resorts

Cold weather and modern snow-making equipment has resulted in a strong start to Maine’s ski season.

“We had our earliest opening day in memory. We opened on the 17th and we opened the top of the mountain before Christmas,” Camden Snow Bowl general manager Landon Fake told WABI.

Maine Public Radio also noted that the recent snowstorm gave ski resorts a boost. Maine's Sunday River Resort in Newry reported more than 20 inches of new snow after the storm.

Sunday River was the first to open among Maine’s ski resorts. Staff there was busy making snow for skiing and snowboarding by late October.

At the Camden Snow Bowl, new snowmaking equipment and the new snow made for optimal skiing conditions.

“As long as the temperatures stay mid 30s to lower, they should be able to keep the season going,” Camden skier Michael Lowe told Maine Public.
