Maine ranks 9th for pay equality

The American Association of University Women ranked Maine ninth nationally in a list of states with the smallest gap between wages for men and women.

The Bangor Daily News reported the study, based on recently released U.S. Census Bureau data, found that women earn an average of 83 cents for every dollar earned by a man in the state.

That’s compared to top-ranking Washington, D.C., where women were found to earn 90 cents to every man-earned dollar and lowest-ranking Wyoming, where the study found women on average earn 64% of what men earn.

The study’s findings are based on a comparison of the median annual income for men and women. In Maine, the study found that women in the southern half of the state fare better than in the northern half, getting paid 82% of what a man makes. In the northern half, the figure was 78%.
