Maine scraps salmon season

Maine officials have decided to call off this year's Atlantic salmon fishing season, after pressure from the federal government.

In a last-minute decision, Gov. John Baldacci and the Department of Marine Resources reluctantly canceled the month-long catch-and-release season scheduled to begin today, after federal regulators strongly urged against it, according to the Bangor Daily News. Baldacci and the Atlantic Salmon Commission last week met with representatives of the National Marine Fisheries Service, which is considering whether to list salmon in the Penobscot, Kennebec and Androscoggin rivers as protected under the Endangered Species Act. Just two weeks ago, state officials said they planned to go ahead with this year's salmon season, which would have been only the second season in the past decade.

The national fisheries service is expected to announce in the coming weeks if Maine's salmon will be listed as endangered.
