When Rosaleen Doherty became dissatisfied with her job in the tech business 20 years ago, she recalled how fulfilling a previous job at a nursing home was.
Doherty and her husband, Jay Kenney, who was also unhappily employed in the IT sector, decided they wanted to switch to careers where they could help others.
Two decades later, the couple celebrated the anniversary of their first Right at Home senior care franchise in-home care by opening their first Maine location in Scarborough.
Right at Home of Greater Portland, at 51 U.S. Route 1, opened in August and is now accepting clients from as far north as Brunswick and south to Kittery, where they help people remain safely in their own homes.
Doherty said 15 home care workers are employed at the Maine location, and the business has attracted a “handful of clients” so far.
The licensed personnel are tasked to help with light-skilled nursing, non-medical and personal care support services such as dressing, nutrition and activities. Each caregiver is screened, trained and bonded/insured before entering a client’s home.
“We are determined to primarily focus on providing dementia and cognitive support and Parkinson’s care,” said Doherty, whose three other franchises are based in Massachusetts. “We work with a client’s ability and what they can do.”
When asked if it was difficult to find enough people who wanted to work at the Maine location, Doherty replied, “No more than in Massachusetts. We find people who want to help other people.”
She said as the business continues to grow she and Kenney may open other offices in Maine; the only other Right at Home in the state is in Bangor and owned by someone else.
Founded in 1995, Right at Home offers in-home care to seniors and adults with disabilities who want to live independently. Its global office is based in Omaha, Neb., with more than 600 franchise locations.
