The effectiveness of Maine’s 15 tax incentive programs, as well as a potential public inquiry into the $16 million in state tax credits intended to revive the Great Northern Paper mill in East Millinocket, are scheduled for review by the Government Oversight Committee in a meeting Thursday in Augusta.
Members of the state committee responsible for assessing the effectiveness of Maine’s economic incentive programs want answers to questions they have been reportedly been posing since 2006, according to the Portland Press Herald.
George Gervais, commissioner of the state’s Department of Economic and Community Development, is expected to appear before the Government Oversight Committee at the meeting. The committee is expected to ask about the definition, coordination and effectiveness of Maine’s 15 tax incentive programs, according to the newspaper, along with queries about quasi-state organizations such as the Maine Milk Commission, the Governor’s Training Initiative and the Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership.
In a separate agenda item, lawmakers are to consider a public inquiry into the Maine New Markets Investment Capital program, the newspaper said. That program was used to award $16 million in state tax credits to out-of-state investors in a failed effort to revive the Great Northern Paper mill, according to the newspaper.
