Long lines have been the norm recently at several state Bureau of Motor Vehicles offices as Mainers apply for a Real ID drivers’ license, which will be required for all domestic airline travel after May 7.
A current passport will be accepted in lieu of the updated license and is still required for international flights.
Secretary of State Shenna Bellows is urging people with upcoming travel plans to make an appointment online at their local BMV, and is also asking those who are not in immediate need of the new license to wait until after May 7.
Bellows said staffing is being increased in six branch offices: Springvale, Portland, Lewiston, Topsham, Scarborough and Augusta.
In addition, all BMV branches except Calais and Ellsworth will cease distributing appointment tickets at 4 p.m. to ensure all applicants can be served before the end of the day. Calais and Ellsworth will stop distributing appointment tickets at 4:30 p.m.
When visiting the BMV, applicants need to supply documents that establish identity, proof of date of birth and lawful permanent residence/lawful status in the U.S., a Social Security number (card not required) and two documents that show residency in Maine, such as a utility bill or pay stub. Additional documentation may be required if an applicant has changed their name.
Deputy secretary of state for the BMV Cathie Curtis is recommending people apply for their Real ID two months prior to flying. “We are taking many steps to help address the record-breaking number of customers visiting our offices and we appreciate everyone’s patience during this time.”
The Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005, but Maine extended the compliance deadline until this year. The secretary of state website has more information.
