Maine Water Co. executive caps 35-year career

After 35 years as a controller with Maine Water Co., Greg Leighton is set to retire today.

Leighton shared his retirement plans in early 2022, which allowed the public water utility to hire his successor, Justin Edelstein, in October 2022.

Greg Leighton "leaves a strong legacy at Maine Water,” said company president Mark Vannoy.

Leighton has also been active in the Maine water utility industry in multiple water districts, including Port Clyde, Waldoboro, Tenants Harbor, Vinalhaven, Fryeburg Water, and the Auburn, Augusta and Sanford water districts.

He oversaw 10 public water utility divisions, plus several operating contracts, for which he performed all the accounting.

“Greg is most proud that employees in the field and their leaders enjoyed working with him and were comfortable doing so,” said Daniel Meaney, director of corporate and external communications for Maine Water. “He accomplished this by doing his job while being personable and approachable to everyone.”

The Cumberland resident has served on the board of directors for the New England Water Works Association for nine years. He graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a bachelor's degree in accounting in 1990 and completed his master's in 2000.

“Greg is a true water professional who always looked for ways to serve our front-line teams," said Mark Vannoy, president of Maine Water. "He leaves a strong legacy at Maine Water.”

“Greg is well-respected by both his colleagues at the company, regulators, and fellow water utilities," Vannoy continued. "His commitment to serve and extraordinary leadership and financial skills have benefited customers and the utility. He modeled the core values of service, transparency and trust that Maine Water has built its reputation on."

Leighton said he plans to spend his retirement playing golfing and traveling.

Edelstein, who was a vice president at Camden National Bank, is a CPA with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Southern Maine.

He's been working closely with Leighton to learn the intricacies of being a controller for water utilities regulated by the Maine Public Utilities Commission.
