Maine yacht-makers seek boost from Chinese press
Maine boatyards are hoping for good press in China after a visit by representatives from China's leading boating magazines.
Working Waterfront reported Wednesday that visitors from the magazines the Hurun Report, China Yachting and Boat Exclusive visited Maine in August during a tour aimed at promoting the industry in China.
Tony Kieffer, managing partner with the Portland-based group MaineAsia, which aims to provide advice about trading and investments between businesses in Maine and Asia, told Working Waterfront that the concept of yachting is changing in China and that the industry consists mostly of American and European builders.
Kieffer said that yacht use is growing in a business context and the rise of China's middle class makes the recreational activity more accessible to more of the population.
