Jim Brady, the Portland developer named a 2017 Mainebiz Next honoree for his role in transforming the city’s eastern waterfront, is starting a new chapter as president and director of a hotel management firm called Fathom Cos.
Starting Oct. 1, Fathom manages the Press Hotel and UNION Restaurant, in an 100-employee entity created by Brady and his Press Hotel business partners Dennis and Chris Ruppel.
As part of his new role, Brady will directly oversee the company’s real estate development arm, focusing on future hotel, office, residential and mixed-use properties. It aims to grow its portfolio through a combination of development, ownership, and/or joint venture partnerships as well as third-party management agreements.
Dennis Ruppel, who has been practicing law for nearly 40 years, is Fathom’s chairman and director, while 21-year financial-industry veteran Chris Ruppel is the firm’s vice president and director. Michael Strejcek is vice president of operations.
In an interview with Mainebiz, Brady said that Fathom would stay close to home, in the New England area, for any new projects. He is currently dipping his toe in the Biddeford market through the recent purchase of a former post office and bank building in need of major renovations.
Brady and other Nexters will be honored at a Mainebiz reception in Portland on Nov. 9.
