Mainebiz won a silver award and a bronze award in the Alliance of Area Business Publishers’ annual editorial excellence competition, competing against 484 entries from 37 publications in the United States, Canada and Australia.
The awards were presented at AABP’s annual summer conference June 23, in Washington, D.C.
Mainebiz received the silver award for “best ancillary publication” in the small publication category for our “Fact Book: Doing Business in Maine.” The judges commented: “Mainebiz makes itself the authority on doing business in Maine. The volume of statistical information and the amount of effort that went into this publication are incredible. There is a mix of visuals, with strong graphics, typography and photographs. The publication is also commended for finding diverse subjects.”
The bronze award for “best feature layout: newspaper” was awarded for the Mainebiz 2017 Next Award issue, which featured profiles of 13 visionary business leaders who are moving Maine’s economy forward.
Here’s what the judges observed about the issue’s layout and design created by Mainebiz Art Director Matt Selva: “This elegant presentation uses a red logo and orange type to link the four segments of the spread. The orange comes from one of the dominate colors in the opening photo. The consistency of color, head sizes and spacing creates a unity, which, in turn, helps readers recognize and navigate the package.”
“The awards are a testament to the hard work of the staff at Mainebiz,” said Editor Peter Van Allen. “We’re grateful AABP saw fit to recognize the work. We continue to look for new ways to present information to readers and our art director, Matt Selva, has been at the forefront of that.”
Reuben Stern, who coordinated the judging by 24 faculty members from the University of Missouri School of Journalism, singled out the “high-quality journalism” being done by the business publications that submitted entries in this year’s competition.
The publications’ entries, he said, included “a lot of data, context and historical perspective that are especially important as truth increasingly gets drowned in a flood of social media snippets. The winning entries once again combine solid research, great sourcing, excellent on-the-ground reporting, deep community knowledge and creative thinking.”
Mainebiz's sister publications won nine other AABP awards.
Hartford Business Journal won four first place awards, and Worcester Business Journal won three first place awards and two second place awards. The publications are owned by New England Business Media Publisher Peter Stanton and President Joe Zwiebel.
