MaineHealth Franklin Hospital appoints director of emergency department

MaineHealth Franklin Hospital in Farmington has hired Blake Hotchkiss as emergency department director.

In this role, Hotchkiss will oversee clinical activities within the unit to ensure the delivery of patient- and family-centered care. He will also manage business operations and serve as a mentor and coach, fostering the professional growth of the care team.

“Blake has demonstrated exceptional leadership in his previous position as nurse manager,” said Deanna Orfanidis, chief nursing officer. “He has successfully led numerous initiatives and played a pivotal role in the planning of our emergency department renovation.”

The emergency department modernization project, which began in early December, will enhance the patient experience and accommodate the increasing demand for care. It reflects Franklin Hospital’s commitment to meeting the community's needs. The project will last 18 to 24 months.

The new department will include additional patient rooms, dedicated behavioral health spaces and a fast-track triage room for low-acuity emergency department visits.

With 20 years of nursing experience spanning tertiary care and rural critical access hospitals, Hotchkiss brings extensive clinical expertise to his role. He has authored several books on vascular access best practices and ultrasound-guided invasive procedures.

Prior to joining MaineHealth, Hotchkiss held roles at New England Clinical Consultants, the American Heart Association, Association for Vascular Access and Central Maine Healthcare.

“Throughout my leadership career, I have taken a collaborative approach, focusing on fundamentals of care and evidence-based practice standards. This back-to-the-basics approach is the guiding principle of how we serve our teams, patients and community.”

The Wayne resident received his bachelor’s degree in nursing at the University of Maine and two master’s degrees — business administration and nursing leadership in health care systems — from Grand Canyon University. He is pursuing a doctor of nursing practice degree, with an anticipated graduation in 2026.

MaineHealth is a not-for-profit, integrated health system. MaineHealth includes a Level 1 trauma medical center, eight additional licensed hospitals, pediatric care services, a behavioral health care network, diagnostic services as well as home health, hospice and senior care services.
