Ten Maine companies put the state at top of the 2018 Inc. 5000’s ‘job creators’ list, based on the largest percentage increase in employees over the past three years.
With Portland-based Vets First Choice adding 636 jobs between 2014 and 2017 as it reached an overall rank of 1,815 on Inc.’s just-released 5000 list for 2018 — the 10 Maine companies on the list increased their collective headcount by 427% in the past three years, according to Inc. 5000’s 37th annual report.
Maine was followed by New Hampshire and Arkansas in posting the largest percentage increase in Inc.'s new employee growth list. California added the most total employees — 252,721 — which netted out to a percentage growth of 195.4% between 2014 and 2017.
SaviLinx, a customer service and tech support center based at Brunswick Landing, is the highest-ranking Maine company in this year’s Inc. 5000. It’s ranked 617th, based on 812% revenue growth over the three years to $10.5 million.

For Tilson Technology, this year marks the eighth year in a row it has ranked on the Inc. 5000 list. Only a fraction of companies on the list have ranked more than once, and less than 2% have made the list eight or more times, according to Inc. Media.
Tilson joins a select few of elite firms including Microsoft, Timberland, Vizio, Intuit, Chobani, Oracle, and Zappos.com as an honoree of the Inc. 5000.
With 17 nationwide offices and more than 450 employees, Tilson is among top categories including:
“This is a truly extraordinary honor and accomplishment,” Tilson CEO Joshua Broder said in a news release. “Eight years later, the Inc. 5000 recognition is a true testament to the value we deliver for our clients and partners across the country. Tilson’s continued growth and success can be attributed to our team’s hard work and dedication to consistently deliver innovative and high-quality products and solutions.”
Shannon Kinney, founder and client success officer of Dream Digital Local, credited her employees for working tirelessly “over the past nine and half years to build this business from an office over my garage to now a national company in more than 65 cities.”
“Being part of a rapidly scaling company isn’t for the faint of heart, and I’m honored to be among the game changers that are part of this list, including nine other businesses in our home state of Maine,” Kinney said in a news release.
The Inc. 5000’s aggregate revenue grew 158%, from $79.8 billion in 2014 to $206.1 billion in 2017, accounting for 664,095 jobs over the past three years. Complete results of the Inc. 5000, including company profiles and an interactive database that can be sorted by industry, region, and other criteria, can be found online here.
“If your company is on the Inc. 5000, it’s unparalleled recognition of your years of hard work and sacrifice,” Inc. editor-in-chief James Ledbetter said in a news release.“The lines of business may come and go, or come and stay. What doesn’t change is the way entrepreneurs create and accelerate the forces that shape our lives.”
The 2018 Inc. 5000 is ranked according to percentage of revenue growth when comparing 2014 and 2018. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by March 31, 2014. They had to be U.S.-based, privately held, for profit, and independent — not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies — as of Dec. 31, 2017. (Since then, a number of companies on the list have gone public or been acquired.)
The minimum revenue required for 2014 is $100,000; the minimum for 2017 is $2 million. Companies on the Inc. 500, which represent the top tier of the Inc. 5000, are featured in Inc.’s September issue and can be found online here.
