Maine’s community colleges get $30M boost from foundation

Business leaders and philanthropists joined a former Maine governor to celebrate the success of The Foundation for Maine’s Community Colleges in not only raising over $30 million total since its inception in 2009, but to also celebrate another $1.6 million gift to the foundation.

The goal of the foundation is to assist the state’s seven community colleges to develop the resources they need to provide a high quality, affordable and accessible college education for Maine people.

“Maine’s community colleges are critical to our ability to build a more prosperous future — for thousands of students and for our state as a whole,” former Maine Gov. John R. McKernan, the chairman of the foundation’s board, said in a statement.

The $1.6 million gift came from the foundation’s Vice Chair Lisa Gorman, who started the foundation with her late husband, Leon Gorman, long-time president and chairman of L.L.Bean. The gift will expand the Leon A. Gorman Endowed Scholarship to all seven of the state’s community colleges, fund a department chair in English for speakers of other languages, in addition to expanding programs and services focused on helping more of Maine’s community college students stay in school and complete a college degree.

“Students across Maine and at every one of our colleges have benefited from your good work,” foundation president Derek Langhauser said in a statement. “We are enormously grateful to all those who have contributed to The Foundation’s remarkable success and to Lisa Gorman’s incredible generosity and leadership.”
