Maine's minimum wage increases today

Maine's minimum wage earners will receive a quarter raise today from $7 to $7.25 an hour.

The raise is the first in a two-step increase that will lift Maine's minimum wage to $7.50 an hour in October 2009. The Maine Labor Department says about 26,000 workers in the state have earnings at or below the minimum wage.

The federal minimum wage is scheduled to increase from $6.55 to $7.25 an hour on July 24, 2009. According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Labor, 74% of workers earning at or below the minimum wage are older than the age of 19, and 24% work full-time or more.
