Insurer, hospital reach deal

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has agreed to keep Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in its network of health care providers through the end of 2009 after threatening not to renew the contract.

The agreement was reached after a three-hour meeting in Bangor on Monday between representatives of Anthem and the Ellsworth hospital, the Bangor Daily News reported. No terms of the contract have been released.

Anthem had complained that the costs of services at Maine Coast Memorial were too high compared to similarly-sized Maine hospitals, and had asked the hospital to triple the discount the insurance company would receive, which would have cost the hospital an additional $2.6 million a year, the paper reported.
