Maine's unemployment estimates drop

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that Maine added 5,200 jobs during September.

The preliminary figures drop the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate to 7.6%, which is down from 7.7% in August.

The national unemployment rate stands at 7.8% for September.

Glenn Mills, chief economist at the Maine Center for Workforce Research and Information, told the Bangor Daily News that his department is "telling people don't make much of the 5,200 job growth" because the statistics are volatile from month to month.

Two years ago, unemployment in Maine hovered around 8%; five years ago, in 2008, it stood at 4.9%; and 10 years ago, in 2002, it stood at 4.5% during the month of September.
