MaineToday Media Inc. will shift the printing of its central Maine newspapers from Augusta to its printing plant in South Portland, Publisher Richard Connor wrote in yesterday's letter from the publisher.
The Kennebec Journal in Augusta and the Morning Sentinel in Waterville will be printed in South Portland starting at the beginning of September. Workers in the press, production and distribution departments in Augusta will be offered jobs at the South Portland facility, Connor said in his letter. The number of jobs affected is unknown. Steven Infinger, MaineToday Media's director of operations, had no comment. "That's still being looked into ... we're working through that process," he told Mainebiz this morning.
Connor also mentions in his letter that MaineToday Media, which also owns the Portland Press Herald, has notified many of its employees throughout the company that it is "considering offering buyouts to several of them." MaineToday Media bought the newspapers from the Seattle Times Co. in June and has since incorporated many cost-cutting measures to strengthen the media company.
