Lisbon's third largest employer is shutting down indefinitely.
The Knight-Celotex facility, which makes eco-friendly fiberboard, closed Friday, the Sun Journal in Lewiston reported. About 80 salaried and hourly employees were laid off, and only a skeleton crew remains. Charles Micoleau, the company's general counsel, told the paper the soft economy, and the relatively high price of natural gas and electricity in Maine caused the shutdown. Micoleau stressed that the closure has nothing to do with a new labor union being recognized on the site in June.
Knight-Celotex, based in Chicago, will keep open its other plants in Sunbury, Pa.; Marrero, La.; and Danville, Va. Micoleau said the Lisbon facility will reopen when overstock at that location is sold. Meanwhile, he told the paper the company will "be conducting an ongoing review of economic conditions."
