A Brunswick man who pleaded guilty to mail fraud and tax evasion that bilked two of Maine's largest companies out of more than $440,000 will serve two years in prison.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Matthew J. LaForge, 38, was also sentenced to three years of supervised release after admitting to the theft from his former employers at L.L.Bean in Freeport and Wright Express (now WEX) in South Portland.
LaForge admitted to taking $231,000 from Wright Express over a three-year period while working there as a business analyst and $220,000 from L.L.Bean over a subsequent three-year period.
The paper reported that LaForge executed the scheme by submitting fictitious invoices for marketing services to both companies, directing payments to a mailbox address in New Hampshire.
LaForge was charged with tax evasion for not reporting that additional income on his tax returns for the years 2006 to 2012, totaling $89,000 in unpaid taxes.
He was also ordered to pay a total of $530,000 in restitution, of which he has paid $24,000, the paper reported.
