Many Flags/One Campus project to buy land

An initiative that would create a joint high school/associate degree educational campus in the midcoast has taken a step forward.

The Many Flags/One Campus Foundation yesterday signed a purchase-and-sale agreement for 205 acres on Route 131 in South Thomaston that could serve as a campus for the project, according to the Herald Gazette. The campus would likely join RSU 13 Oceanside High School; Region 8's Mid-Coast School of Technology, a higher education center offering University of Maine and Maine Community College System programs; and industry learning centers for the Maine Marine Trades Association's Marine Systems Training Center. Residents in the surrounding communities must vote on the location, known to locals as the Anderson farm. Should residents approve it, the foundation would convey the land to the public school system. Alan Hinsey, executive director of the foundation, did not specify how much earnest money had been put down on the property or the asking price. The land and buildings are assessed at $497,100, according to the paper. Hinsey also hosts Mainebiz Sunday.

The state Legislature in 2008 passed a bill to create such an educational campus, and last year the State Board of Education chose the Many Flags/One Campus project.
