Motorists can expect faster commutes after the state approved increased speed limits on portions of Maine’s interstate highways and Route 1.
The Bangor Daily News reported some sections of Interstate 95, Interstate 295, Interstate 395 and Route 1 had their speed limits increased by five miles per hour, bringing some stretches of road up to a 70 mph. See the posted changes below.
Transportation Commissioner David Bernhardt said the increases were approved after a study showed “it’s much safer if the [speed driven by most motorists] and the posted speed are the same.”
A bill that passed into law last year gave the commissioner the authority to increase the speed limit on any section of Maine’s interstate system. AAA of Northern New England had opposed the bill, saying it would create safety concerns.
