March home sales rise 46%

The number of homes sold in Maine in March jumped 46% from the same month last year, and the median sales price rose as well.

The Maine Association of Realtors said 815 single-family homes were sold last month, compared with 558 in March 2009, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. The median sales price was $164,900, a nearly 10% increase from last year's price of $150,000. The association attributed the rise in sales to the federal first time and repeat home buyer tax credits, which expire at the end of this month.

Sales in the Northeast increased 25.4% in March, while the median sales price rose 8.9% to $249,800. Nationally, March sales increased 13.3%, while the median sales price rose only 1% to $170,700.
