Marijuana growers form trade group

The state's small-scale medical marijuana growers have formed a trade group to better lobby at the State House.

Medical Marijuana Caregivers of Maine has nearly 100 members and a staff member based out of Portland, with plans to hire two field organizers, according to the Kennebec Journal. Board Chairman Jonathan Leavitt told the paper the group wants more influence in legislative decisions related to medical marijuana. Its priorities include eliminating a state rule that requires medical marijuana users to register and increasing the amount of marijuana users can possess, which is currently 2.5 ounces.

Medical marijuana caregivers are allowed to grow and sell marijuana to a maximum of five patients, though storefront dispensaries operated by licensed nonprofit organizations are now legal through the state's expanded medical marijuana law.
