Two eastern Maine lumber companies with a combined 10 locations in Maine are planning to merge, effective Jan. 1.
Belfast-based Viking Lumber Inc. will merge with Rhoades Building Products Inc., rebranding Rhoades' five locations Down East as Viking Lumber, according to a press release. The company will be jointly owned by the Flanagan family, which owns Viking Lumber, and Chris Rhoades, CEO of Rhoades Lumber, and have nearly 200 employees. The merger allows the new company to expand its building materials products to customers in Hancock, Knox, Lincoln, Penobscot, Waldo and Washington counties, and ensure competitive pricing, according to the release.
Founded in 1944, Viking Lumber has five lumberyards in Belfast, Hancock, Lincolnville, Vinalhaven and Warren, as well as a stone division called Viking Hardscapes. Chris Rhoades purchased hardware and lumber retailer H.F. Pinkham and its Machias and Milbridge locations in 2004, and opened a window/door showroom in Ellsworth in 2006. In 2007, Rhoades bought Granville Lumber in Holden and Blue Hill.
