The Maine Maritime Museum was the recipient of a trio of grants totaling more than $85,000, including a $50,000 National Maritime Heritage Grant, which will help fund a new, immersive exhibit set to open in summer 2017.

The exhibit, “Into the Lantern,” will be a full-scale replica of the Cape Elizabeth Two Lights lighthouse tower lantern room, allowing visitors to see the original second-order Fresnel lens from the west tower at Two Lights and experience the environment of the lantern room through time-lapsed video projections featuring a panorama of the Gulf of Maine that will change with the weather and seasons.

The maritime museum also received a $35,000 grant from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation in memory of U.S. Navy Cmdr. Raymond G. Spruce to fund the purchase of new chairs for Long Reach Hall, and a $1,500 grant from the West Marine/BlueFuture Fund to help support the museum’s Discovery Boatbuilding Program.

“Our maritime heritage is deeply important both culturally and economically, and we’re incredibly grateful for the financial support that enables us to continue to offer a world-class experience to visitors from around the world,” the museum’s executive director, Amy Lent, said in a prepared statement.
