The Downs mixed-use neighborhood in Scarborough will soon be getting a supermarket in the development's Town Center, now under construction. A branch of Massachusetts-based supermarket chain Market Basket plans to open a store in the center by fall 2026.

The 80,000-square-foot Market Basket, to be located at the corner of Market Street and Scarborough Downs Road, was announced as the Town Center’s first retail tenant. It will stock more than 50,000 products and is expected to create 300 new jobs in Scarborough, which has a population of 24,000.

Although the first retailer in the Town Center, the supermarket won't be far from a Costco warehouse store that opened last year in the Down's Innovation District, just to the north.

Estimated construction costs for the Market Basket store were not disclosed.

“It is very rewarding to start delivering long-awaited amenities that residents and visitors want here in Scarborough,” said Peter Michaud, managing partner of the Downs. “Market Basket is an excellent grocer, and we are confident this marks the beginning of exciting things to come” in the emerging neighborhood.

Roccy Risbara, another managing partner and a 2020 Mainebiz Business Leader of the Year honoree, added that Scarborough is a desirable community.

Market Basket, whose roots go back to a single store in the mill town of Lowell, Mass., that opened in 1917, has grown to 90 locations across four states. In Maine, Market Basket now has stores in Topsham, Westbrook and Biddeford.

“The Downs presented a vibrant opportunity for Market Basket to be located within a true Town Center, with people and supporting services all within walking distance,” said Joe Schmidt, Market Basket’s operations director.

“The whole team is very much looking forward to bringing Market Basket and ‘more food for your dollar’ shopping to Scarborough and the surrounding communities.”

The Downs’ 550-acre campus includes 680 units of mixed-use housing, as well as more than 50 national and local businesses.

“As a longtime resident of Scarborough, I am thrilled to see this vision take shape after nearly 20 years of planning,” said Bryan Shumway, a Downs resident and former Scarborough Downtown Committee member.

“Market Basket will provide a solid foundation for the Town Center, and it reinforces the fact that the developers have been listening to the community.”
