Marketing focus of farmers conference

The first-ever Maine Farmers' Market Convention this weekend at Acadia National Park got farmers talking about market share and expanded customer bases.

Sponsored by the Down East Business Alliance, the convention focused on how to market products and the farmers themselves, as well as advice on technical issues such as electronic monetary transfers and licensing for food production and sales, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Presenters focused on branding, networking and tactics for getting more business from tourists. A state Department of Agriculture report in 2008 estimated sales of $75 million from the Agricultural Creative Economy Sector, which it identified as farmers who modify

operations and products to serve consumers who want fresh local produce, meats and specialty food products, often through a farmers' market.
