FairPoint troubles continue

Maine's Public Utilities Commission is reporting a surge in complaints surrounding problems with FairPoint's takeover of Verizon's landline operation.

Six weeks after North Carolina-based FairPoint Communications started its switchover of the northern New England operation, a PUC spokesman said the commission's consumer assistance division has seen a record number of service-related complaints, according to the Portland Press Herald. Most of the complaints concern billing errors or difficulty reaching customer service.

Jeff Nevins, FairPoint spokesperson, said part of the problem is delays in transferring data from one computer system to another, resulting in some customers getting March bills that show unpaid February balances even though the payments were made. The company is fixing the problem as fast as it can, said Nevins.
