The state’s Department of Environmental Protection has awarded a contract to recycle 27,000 tons of fiber materials that have been stored in Warren for 14 years to the Massachusetts-based Triumvirate Environmental Inc.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the firm plans to hire eight to 16 people in Warren to process the waste fiber for conversion into composite lumber by December 2016.
Triumvirate beat out three Maine-based bidders, which were the University of Maine, S.J. Clisham of Winterport and Farley & Sons Landscaping of Rockport.
The town has tried to get rid of the highly flammable material for about 14 years. The DEP said the waste pile was placed there after Gates Formed Fiber of Auburn paid nearly $1 million to have the fiber waste dumped on the property, which was a rifle range doing business as Steamship Navigation.
The DEP eventually received $410,000 from the former owner to assist in cleanup costs.
