Mass. furniture chain opens in Maine next week, with face masks — and indoor ropes course

Three years after anchor department store Bon-Ton left the Maine Mall, and a year after announcing plans to fill the cavernous space, Jordan’s Furniture is preparing to open its first Maine store there next week.

The East Taunton, Mass.-based furniture retailer said this week it will open its doors at the mall July 17 at noon.

The 120,000-square-foot, two-floor branch will be Jordan’s seventh. An 8,000-square-foot outlet center will also open.

Last year, Furniture Mattress & More moved into a 150,000-square-foot space previously occupied by Macy’s at the Bangor Mall.

Like other Jordan’s stores, the Maine one will feature more than furniture and mattresses. Attractions include a food stand and IT, “the state’s largest indoor adventure ropes course for kids and adults,” Jordan’s said on its site. Graphics and video will be displayed on the largest LED-lighted indoor ceiling in North America.

A Jordan's Furniture sign was ready Thursday morning to be hoisted into position at Gorham and Philbrook roads in South Portland, next to the Maine Mall.

Jordan’s said all of its stores follow safety practices against COVID-19, including requirements that employees and visitors wear protective face masks, temperature checks for workers, social distancing and thorough cleaning and sanitizing.

The store at the South Portland mall was originally slated to open in the spring, but the debut was pushed back because of the pandemic.

Jordan’s agreed in May 2019 to take the space, which had been vacant since Bon-Ton closed its only Maine location in April 2017. Jewett Construction, of Scarborough, has handled redevelopment of the space.

Jordan’s Furniture already has three stores, a clearance center and a 750,000-square-foot warehouse and office complex in Massachusetts, as well as stores in Connecticut, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.

Founded in 1918 by Samuel Tatelman in Waltham, Mass., the company was later run by Tatelman’s grandsons, Barry and Eliot. Barry Tatelman left the family business in 2006, and Eliot now serves as president.

“Once open, our [Maine] store will be a destination. It will be one-stop shopping for not only furniture and mattresses but also entertainment, and maybe more,” Eliot Tatelman said in a news release last year.

The origin of the Jordan’s company name is unclear. Barry and Eliot Tatelman have publicly speculated their grandfather chose the name out of a hat.
