May home sales jump 25%

Maine home sales increased nearly 25% during the month of May, while the median sales price saw an uptick as well.

A total of 1,090 existing single-family homes were sold in May, a 24.29% rise compared with May 2009, according to the Maine Real Estate Information System Inc. The median sales price rose 6.19% to $169,900. Franklin County saw the biggest year-over-year jump, with the number of homes sold nearly doubling from 30 to 59, and the median price rising more than 12% to $112,500. Only Washington County saw a drop in home sales, falling 20% compared with May 2009.

Home sales nationwide rose 17.5%, while the median price inched up 2.7% to $179,400. In the Northeast, home sales were up 12.7% in May, while the median sales price dropped 2.2% to $240,200.
