While the pandemic has upset hiring plans for many businesses, McDonald’s restaurants expect to add 1,000 employees in Maine this summer.
The new hires are among 260,000 the giant fast-food chain expects to make across the U.S., according to a news release Tuesday. That workforce is about the same as the seasonal help McDonald’s Corp. (NYSE: MCD) said it would add in 2017; the company doesn’t release information about how many are actually hired.
The current hiring spree comes after McDonald’s has implemented nearly 50 new safety measures in its franchises to protect customers and staff, the release said. The precautions include new training and food-handling procedures as well as wellness and temperature checks, social distancing floor stickers, protective barriers at order points, and masks and gloves for employees.
Ron Lydick, a McDonald’s owner/operator, said in the release, “We are a people business at our core, and as we look to reopen our dining rooms, the safety and wellness of our customers and employees is a top priority, as it has been throughout our 65-year history.”
Maine is home to 58 McDonald’s restaurants, from Kittery to Fort Kent, and has more of them per capita than any other state in the Northeast, according to USA Today. There are nearly 38,000 of the iconic restaurants worldwide, and 14,000 in the U.S.
