Six Maine cultural organizations to receive over $730K in federal funding

Six Maine cultural organizations will receive grants totaling $731,189 from the National Endowment for the Humanities to help the nonprofits retain employees and continue essential operations during the current economic crisis.

The grant recipients, announced Tuesday in several news releases, are: 

  • Bowdoin College, in Brunswick: $200,000 to strengthen humanities instruction, reduce class size and retain four faculty members;
  • Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, in Boothbay: $225,903 to develop virtual learning experiences, self-guided tours and other preparations for safer visitor interaction, retaining 11 employees
  • Lewiston Public Library: $121,847 to retain two staff members working on youth services;
  • Monhegan Museum: $38,409, to develop a digital exhibit and retain four employees and a web design consultant;
  • Northeast Historic Film, Bucksport: $78,425, for digital uploading of film and videotape, retaining six staffers; and
  • Penobscot Marine Museum, Searsport: $66,605 to retain four existing employees and add a museum educator to develop digital programming.
